Why Pai Should Be On Your Thailand Itinerary

Set in a picturesque valley and surrounded by green rolling hills, Pai seems to be the backpacker’s dream. Not only is it cheap, but it is also filled with fellow travelers to sit around and swap stories. Maybe this isn’t the authentic Thailand, but the chill vibe is addicting and a must-see.

Awesome Location

Pai is nestled in northern Thailand, near the border of Myanmar about 50 miles, or 3 hour ride by mini bus, away from Chiang Mai. I suggest taking a private mini bus for a few extra baht over the public buses, as the road to Pai is extremely windy and almost all uphill. However, the journey is worth it. Because of its location, Pai is excellent for trekking and is best explored on foot. It is a small, compact town but close to many waterfalls and farms. You can enjoy the town itself as it has several restaurants, bars, and shops, however the surrounding areas of the town have unmatched beauty.

Great Accomodation

I stayed in SpicyPai Backpackers Hostel for 4 bucks a night. It is situated a bit outside of town but if you rent a motorbike it is an easy, couple-minute journey. Coming across the bridge, I soon saw a few wooden huts in the vast fields of Pai. Once we parked, we noticed a bunch of backpackers hanging out in the common area, which happened to be another wooden hut accessed by a bamboo ladder. Young travelers lounged around—some in the hammocks, others lazily sitting on the cushions on the floor. Most yelled down a friendly hello—much like you would get from your room mate when you get home. I instantly was sucked into the low-key and laid-back vibe. Slowly Pai was turning into my oasis.

Our room at Spicy Pai

After waiting at the vacant front desk for a few minutes, a guy in his early 30s stumbled down. He was loud and friendly—perfect expat combo. He explained to us the owners were gone but as a basically permanent fixture at the hostel, that he was happy to help. Once we were sorted out and discussed the chili pepper bamboo tattoo on his right arm, he showed us to our hut. Lockers were outside and inside were 4 bunks with mosquito nets covering them, since well basically we were sleeping outside. The slits in the hut cooled it off and it felt surprisingly decent compared to the blistering Thailand heat outside.

Active Main Street

Later that night the streets came alive. Eccentric stands filled the little main road and sounds of reggae tunes belted from the various bars. Local vendors sell knick-knacks to tourists as the lazily wandered the street. I wondered about some of the foreigners that seemed to have taken root in Pai. There seems to be a nice balance between Western permanent residents and chill local Thais. For me, I could easily get lost in a place like this. Few worries, a simpler life.

Wonderful People

After a full day of trekking and a delicious dinner, we decided to skip the live music scene and instead join fellow backpackers around the fire at Spicy Pai. Sharing stories of our recent adventures while listening to a fellow traveler strum on his guitar made for the perfect night.

Pai is a perfect getaway to see another side of Thailand. It combined the beauty of Thailand, a laid-back atmosphere, and great people to connect with. I know next time I make it to Thailand, Pai will definitely be a stop!
